How to block adult content on Android so you cannot quietly undo it

Blocking a category on Android takes two minutes. Making the block still be there in three weeks, at 1 a.m., when you would rather it were not — that is the actual problem, and it needs one extra step almost every guide leaves out.

Step by step

   Install the app and sign in

   Pick categories rather than individual sites

   Adult content is thousands of domains and new ones appear daily. Choosing the category means the list is maintained for you; adding individual domains is for the specific sites you know are your own weak spot. On the free tier you get 5 categories and 50 individual domains, which is more than most people use.

   Turn on Always-On VPN with lockdown

   Android Settings → Network & internet → VPN → gear icon next to squeevio → enable "Always-on VPN" and "Block connections without VPN". This is the step that matters most: without it, protection stops the moment the app is killed by the system or by you. With it, Android itself refuses to pass traffic when the filter is not running. The app shows a banner on its home screen when this is not set, precisely because it is easy to skip.

   Add a partner — this is the actual mechanism

   Invite someone you trust. From that point you can still add protection freely at any time, but you cannot remove it alone. They can grant a time-boxed unlock remotely, or read you a one-time code you type in, which works with no connectivity at all. They never see your browsing history, messages or calls — only which categories and domains are blocked and which devices are linked.

   Decide now what happens when you hit the block

   Write the reason you are doing this into the app while you are calm. When a blocked site is attempted, the app opens a full-screen set of tools — a breathing exercise, that written reason, a one-tap call to someone, a place to log the urge — instead of a scolding page. The moment of temptation is when help is most useful and when most software only says no.

What this does not do

• —It does not make relapse impossible. Any adult holding a device can factory-reset it, use a second phone, or borrow a friend's. The point is to remove the one-tap escape so that going around the block becomes a decision rather than a reflex.
• —It does not work well without a partner. Alone, you can unlock yourself after a delay — meaningfully weaker, and we would rather say so.
• —It is not therapy. If the pattern is costing you your work, your sleep or your relationships, software is a support, not the treatment.
• —The Android app is not published in Google Play at the time of writing, so install is from the site rather than the store.

Questions

Can I block adult content without a VPN app?

Partly. You can set a filtering DNS on the Wi-Fi network, but it stops applying the moment you leave that network or switch to mobile data, and any browser with its own encrypted DNS ignores it. Android's own Private DNS field can be pointed at a filtering resolver, which is better than nothing and still turned off in two taps by whoever wants it off.

Does this slow my phone down?

Filtering happens on the device, so there is no round trip to a remote server for the decision. Answers to repeat lookups are cached, which in practice makes ordinary browsing slightly faster than the carrier's own resolver rather than slower.

Will it see what I browse?

No. The decision is made locally and browsing history is not uploaded anywhere — not to us and not to your partner. There is nothing to leak because nothing is collected.

What about apps rather than browsers?

Filtering covers all traffic on the device, not only browsers, and specific apps can be blocked by name as well. Category schedules let you allow something during the day and block it at night.
